Everyone seems to know Buffalo New York for its nasty winters. But if you are a snow lover, there are all kinds of winter activities for you to do. For starters, nothing beats attending a Buffalo Sabres game in late December or early January. Or, feel the excitement of more than seventy thousand psychos hollering for their beloved Bills football team while the snow is flying. Start your NFL game day Sunday by tailgating in the parking lot prior to the game. Chow down on some of those Buffalo wings. Drink some great Canadian beer or taste some local ale from a microbrewery.

Riding snow machines is a very popular pastime around the Buffalo area. There are plenty of snowmobile stores to satisfy the needs of this fun loving industry. People like to load up their machines on trailers and take them into the really rural areas in New York State for some major trail blazing. They take week long vacations just to do some trail riding. Many people like to use the snowmobile as a means to go bar hopping. Even the police have snow machines now. They hunt these bar hoppers down, dishing out tickets for driving while intoxicated.

Do you like to ski? Skiing is also a pretty popular way to make the best of the Buffalo winters. There are a number of decent ski slopes in the greater Western New York region. Experienced skiers might say that the slopes around Buffalo are on the small side and not challenging enough. But, the people who live around Buffalo sure seem to enjoy them. I guess you could think of it as a great place to learn how to ski without breaking a leg. And, if you really don't feel like skiing, there is still the warm lodge full of good looking yuppies with a fair amount of disposable income.

Snowboarding has become a very popular national sport in the United States. It has also become popular around Buffalo. In the early 1990s you might only have seen a few snowboarders here and there on the ski slopes. Now they are much more common. Just like skiing, the rolling hills south and east of Buffalo provide decentquality slopes for beginning snowboarders to practice on.

The whitetail deer hunting in the rural areas surrounding Buffalo brings in some monster bucks. Actually this is a late fall sport more so than a winter one. The season ends in most areas before winter actually starts. The deer population has exploded over recent years to provide a hunting environment that is like shooting fish in a barrel. This sport is so popular that many area high schools are sparsely populated during the first week of shotgun season.

For kids, the icy and snowy winters around Buffalo are great fun. There are a thousand ways for children to have fun outside in the snow. Some kids will their fair share of the basic backyard sledding. Others will find a giant snow mound to carve a tunnel into. There is the ever popular snowball fight with the other children who live nearby. For active kids there is an athletic sport called pond hockey. Actually it is an old kids' playtime activity turned into a sport. There are lots of really nice parks where groups of people can go tobogganing for free. You really don't need to be all that creative to come up with a great idea for enjoying the winter when you are in Buffalo. There really is a lot to do.

The Proud Ones: Well-bred Morgan and down-and-out physician Philipe cross roads in Vera Cruz, Mexico, in this sponging up story of love, religion, and the outcomes of a catastrophic plague on the impoverished population. Striking and atmospheric; based on Jean-Paul Sartre novel L 'Arrwur Redempteur set in China! Cast includes Michele Morgan, Gerard Philipe, Winner Manuel Mendoza, and Michele Cordoue. (94 minutes, 1953)

The Wedding Singer: Robbie has just been dumped, right before he was supposed to get married. He resumes his job as a wedding singer, but is miserable and depressed. While singing at weddings he strikes up a friendship with a waitress, who is engaged to a total jerk. Can these two see that they are meant for each other?

Higher Learning: Columbus University is a true melting pot of cultures and social backgrounds. These young kids face racism, rape, peer pressures, and sexual development in this tense trauma. One confused, mild mannered, student finds himself part of a violent skinhead gang when he finds nowhere else to turn for help.

II Posto: This early Olmi characteristic has something of the feel of early Truffaut and Milos Forman in its depiction of everyday life with its small glories and failures. Easy tale that interests a teenaged boy getting his first job and meeting a gal, however the beauty of the film is in the admiring and perceptive examination of human beings. Well performed however by no means relatively summits. : Cast includes John Brute, James Woods, Franklyn Seales, Ted Danson, Ronny Cox, Dianne Hull, and Pat Corley. (127 minutes, 1979)
